Project-Based Learning Modules

Conn students choose from a variety of grade level specific project-based learning modules to enhance their understanding of "real world" problems and opportunities. These projects reinforce the North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives and encourage students to develop higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies. For example, third graders choosing the Project-Based Learning Module, "Decrease the Dump," visit the Wake County Landfill for a better understanding of the importance of recycling and reducting household waste. Students then design an advertising campaign to encourage community members to "Decrease the Dump."
How are modules different from electives?
Modules are grade level specific, so they are tailored to the curriculum and the needs of the students in that particular grade. Electives are taught to multiage groups of students, so students in grades K-2 will be taught in classes of students ranging from kindergarten to second grade, and 3-5 students will be taught in classes of students from third to fifth grade. Students take twelve three-week modules per year. Electives are nine week studies of a subject.
